Gemstone – Amethyst

Stones have fascinated me ever since I took my first science class in elementary school.  I was excited about using them in my jewelry pieces and  began using them approximately 2 years ago.  I’m learning more about gemstones and  their characteristics and wanted to give you information on them.  I have several favorite stones and the one of them is  Amethyst.

Amethyst is the variety of quartz with a natural violet color. The color is violet due to iron, other trace elements, and irradiation.  Amethyst is known for transformation and is under the sign of Aquarius.  It is said to give you strength and motivation to make a change. . Many use the stone to ward off nightmares and encourage “sweet dreams”.  I notice when I am making jewelry with this gemstone, it gives me a sense of peace and calm.

My information on this and other stones comes from The Essential Guide to Crystals, Minerals and Stones by Margaret Ann Lembo.  I’ll be writing about gemstones and their characteristics every month. Thank you for learning with me

Shinin’, Shinin’, Shinin Copper

Copper is a metal I love working with and wearing.  I began making copper jewelry because of my dad.  He wrapped a piece of copper around his wrist to relieve joint pain.  I wanted to give him a more “fashionable” way of wearing his copper wire, so I made him a copper bracelet. As you may know, copper jewelry tarnishes overtime due to it’s exposure to sweat, lotions, soaps, and air.  Lately, a lot of people have asked how to clean/polish copper.  I have found a couple of natural methods that work.

One method I use to polish copper is with lemons.  I mix the juice from an actual lemon or 100% lemon juice and a sprinkle of salt in a container.  I cover the  jewelry piece with the solution for a minute or less and my piece is restored to it’s original shine.   I’ve also heard scrubbing the jewelry piece with a lemon also works. Even polishing it with a paste made from lemon juice with equal parts salt and baking soda.   Make sure to rinse and dry off the piece after polishing it due to the acidity of lemons.  Avoid using lemons with jewelry pieces that contain stones.

Another method sounds weird, but works.  I put a little bit of ketchup on a cloth and rub it on my jewelry piece until its shine is to my liking.  I’ve also heard hot sauce or soy sauce works.   Make sure to rinse and dry the piece after polishing.  These methods have worked for me and hopefully they will be helpful for you.

Added tip:

Copper has a tendency to discolor skin.  This can be  prevented by sealing the copper with lacquer or periodically coating it with clear nail polish.  The jewelry piece will dull overtime; therefore, clean it  with a jewelry polishing cloth.

Grateful

This is my first post on this website. I want to start by giving glory to God for this journey. I have learned so much about myself and how awesome He is.  He has provided me with support and information when I needed it.  I  started this business thinking I need to go in one direction and He takes me in a direction that is so much better and makes so much more logic.  In this journey I sometimes get discouraged and every time, He sends someone or something that makes me feel I can make it.  He shows me things that as a person I need to improve upon and gives me a direction to do it. He sustains me financially and teaches me the differences between want and need.  I always go back to the bible verse that talks about how God provides for the animals, trees, etc… and why would He not provide for me.   I stand in awe at how I can even think of something,  I need not saying a word out loud to anyone, and He then provides an avenue for it.  He even softly whispers in my ear things I need to do and from what He told me I am put in a better position to receive or learn something. . I give thanks to Him for allowing me to “step into” His Will for me.  Thank you Jesus.

Signed
